Company

Martinus van Breems, Inc., Dutchman Sail Hardware is a successor company to Van Breems Holland Yachts, Inc., originally formed to import Dutch sailboats by Arie van Breems Sr., Martin's father.

Arie Sr. started importing yachts into the United States in 1956 under the name Van Breems International. The company imported wood, steel, and fiberglass boats, and also built boats in the U.S., including the well known Block Island 40.

In the early 1960s, Arie Sr became head of international sales for MPB, Inc., a mid sized company, and started Van Breems Holland Yachts on a part-time/weekends basis to bring in a line of quality Dutch built yachts called Contest. The company established an office in 1968. By the early 1970s, VBHY was the largest yacht importer in the US, selling up to 100 yachts a year.

In 1973, the company was sold to Medalist Industries. After several years, Medalist sold the business back to Arie van Breems Sr. About 500 Contest Yachts were sold in the U.S. up to 1980, mostly 31s and 33s from the early 1970s. These boats have a good reputation as solid, offshore-capable cruising yachts.

In the early 1980s, Arie van Breems became more active importing Contests again. Martin van Breems already had a business servicing boats, and became the service manager.

The dollar was back under 50¢ to the guilder, and Contest developed several interesting new models. Martin van Breems graduated from Babson College in 1983, and opened a new office at 571 Riverside Avenue in Westport. Sales climbed up to 6 -10 yachts a year by 1985. In 1986, Martin bought out his father and started MVB Inc. Dutchman Sail Hardware and Sound Sailing Center. Dutchman Sail Hardware offers the most advanced, innovative and user-friendly sail hardware of its kind. Sound Sailing offers sailing lessons, through both beginners' and advanced courses, as well as boating club memberships, and yacht charters. It also offers knowledgeable brokerage sales to existing Sound Sailing Center members and students.
